Reel Trivial: Captain Ron (1992)

  1. Paul Anka plays the yacht broker, Donaldson. Anka is primarily known as a singer/songwriter, with hits such as 1959’s “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” and his rendition of “My Way”. A boat bearing the name “My Way” appears on-screen just before Anka steps out of his car toward the end of the film.

2. The title character was based on a real boat captain named Ron. According to screenwriter John Dwyer, his father bought the family a used boat and hired a veteran sailor named Ron to get the boat back to their home in Texas.1

3. Meadow Sisto, who plays Caroline, is the real-life older sister of actor Jeremy Sisto. Jeremy played Cher’s wannabe boyfriend Elton in Clueless.

4. Both the yellow and red cars that Captain Ron drives in the movie are missing their left headlights, mirroring Captain Ron’s missing eye.

5. References are made to “The Pirates of the Caribbean” as well as Captain Ron mentioning he’s never been to Disney World. The film was released by The Walt Disney Company under their Touchstone Pictures banner.

6. Kurt Russell has stated that the original title for the film was Martin Harvey Takes A Vacation.2

7. The movie’s soundtrack was never commercially released. Some physical copies of the soundtrack were produced as promos, along with a “Special Edition” soundtrack released by a boutique label, Geek Records.

8. Captain Ron’s last name is Rico. Ronrico is a brand of Puerto Rican rum launched in 1935.

9. In the magistrate’s office in St. Pomme de Terre, a potato can be seen on the desk.
